The fast bowler Poised for a Major Role in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

Australia's chief selector George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches kicking off on 21 November in the WACA.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and felt positive about his chances of participating.

"We're aware that time is getting short and multiple considerations at play, not only the physical problem, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a significant role. Hopefully starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of back injuries, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of three Australian summers in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the contest.

He mentioned that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the first Test as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the initial matches anyway. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
